Aeon Flux Review :: [13:12:32]Went to see Aeon Flux yesterday. To be honest I wish I hadn't got out of my bed to bother. It's an ok film but that's the problem, it's only ok. If it had been on TV I wouldn't have minded but actually going to cinema to see this thing just seemed so wrong. I have never actually seen the highly popular anime so I don't really know what the fuss is, but if the anime is like the movie I don't think I will bother. I'm not saying it's a bad film, I'm just saying it's not a good one. If you haven't figured the plot out in the first 20 minutes you need to stop reading my blog by the way; your IQ isn't high enough. You then find yourself sitting around during dull conversations waiting for the characters in the film to catch up to the point where you are at. That feels like an eternity in itself. The action which you are offered as some kind of entertainment fails to be entertaining in any true sense due to the cliched manouvers and the over emphasis on boringly long gun fights. Then you have the curious decision of using some of the worst camera angles in action scenes I have ever seen. I literally think they brought in some film students and said "Now, which camera angles are the WORST you can think of for this scene?" then went with those! The lead characters are uninteresting and lack depth to a degree that they might as well have called them "Generic female lead" and "Generic regime figurehead who is actually good". The acting finds itself somewhat underpar as well with particularly wooden performances all round which makes the obvious attempts at drawing emotions out of the watcher pointless as it's too damn hard to empathize with the characters. Something someone else pointed out was the overuse of sci-fi tech' just to impress the people watching, despite the lack of explanations of any of it or even an idea of how or why such (in some cases utterly ridiculous) tech' would be developed. Would seem whoever came up with the concepts was more concerned with making something to make the audience go "oooo ahhhh" than actually using their brains and thinking about how the tech' would develop in reality. Don't make any mistakes here, I am not questioning how the stuff works I am questioning why such technology would ever be developed in the first place considering it defies logical creation of technology; ie it ignores functionality and purpose.
I am tempted to write something here about the ridiculous choice the lead character makes towards the end of the film but quite frankly it's just the ultimate example of some twisted writer who can't put depth into his characters so I'm not even going to sully myself by bothering. In closing; go watch Equilibrium instead.
:: [12:59:54]I have been very ill over the weekend and most of this week, I am only today really feeling like I can function without any difficulty. I probably just have a cold or something but it has been quite a bad one. Haven't even been into uni' this week except to renew some library books and pay a fine. At one point on Monday I couldn't speak for quite a few hours! On the mend though, nearly back to my normal semi-healthy self. I even went out yesterday, felt like crap but what can you do?
